Sold for $240. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

M. Plaetorius M.f. Cestianus. 57 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.95 g, 6h). Rome mint. Turreted and draped bust of Cybele right; forepart of lion behind, globe below chin / Curule chair; coiled serpent to left. Crawford 409/2; Sydenham 808; Plaetoria 3; Type as RBW 1484. Near EF, toned. Clear die clash.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Naville Numismatics 7 (11 May 2014), lot 117.

This is an excellent example of a die clash, with the reversed and incuse letters AED C before the chin being a clear reflection of AED CVR on the reverse. Rarely do die clashes come so clear. A die clash between two incuse-engraved dies produces a raised feature on the damaged die and thus an incuse and reversed image on the as-struck coin. Compare also to lot 431. [Andrew McCabe]
