Sold for $650. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Elagabalus. AD 218-222. AR Denarius (20mm, 3.16 g, 6h). Uncertain Eastern mint. Struck circa AD 218-220. [A]NTONINVS PIVS FE[L A]VG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / GENIO SENATVS, Genius of the Senate, togate, standing left, holding branch. RIC IV 234 (Caracalla); Thirion –; RSC 90c (Caracalla). Near EF, toned. Very rare.

From the estate of Thomas Bentley Cederlind.

Both RIC and RSC attribute this coin to Caracalla, but then both question this attribution, and speculate that it is actually Elagabalus (see RIC IV, p. 245 note and RSC 90c where it states “Doubtful, or possibly a coin of Elagabalus).
