Justinian I. 527-565. AV Solidus (22mm, 4.48 g, 6h). Ravenna mint (or a mint in Sicily?), 7th officina. Struck 552-565. D N IVSTINI–ANVS P P AVC, helmeted and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger in right hand, shield over left shoulder / VICTORI–A AVCCC, angel standing facing, holding long staff surmounted by christogram in right hand and globus cruciger in left; star in right field; z//CONOB. DOC 333c = MIBE NV375 (same dies; Sicilian mint); Ranieri 322; SB 312. Good VF, graffiti (two M’s on obv., crude star on rev.).

Some peculiarities in the engraving are immediately apparent. Note the awkward cutting of the “R” in the reverse legend and the unusually small “Z.” Hahn moved this issue from Ravenna (MIB) to a mint in Sicily (MIBE) based on the Monte Judica Hoard (see previous lot). He interprets the terminal letters of the reverse legends to be dates rather than officinae, with year 7 corresponding to 557/8.
