CLAUDIUS. 41-54 AD. Æ As (12.38 gm). TI CLAVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP P P, bare head left / LIBERTAS AVGVSTA, S C across field, Libertas standing right, holding pileus. RIC I 113; Cohen 47. EF, green patina.

Various dates have been proposed for the bronze issues of Claudius. BMCRE assigns a date of circa 42-43 AD for this issue, while RIC proposes a date of circa 50-54 AD. Recent surveys of hoards, especially those from Britain, have shown that the 'P P' title was actually added very early in Claudius' reign, perhaps within the first year or two.
