In the 10th century, the Kings of Wessex collected a tax known as the Romescot, or Peter’s Pence. Collected annually on St. Peter’s day, this tax was sent to the Holy See in Rome. This practice is the likely source for a number of Anglo-Saxon coin hoards found in Rome.
