THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. temp. Tiberius. AD 14-37. Æ Hemiassarion (18mm, 4.71 g, 1h). Lykoutos, strategos. ΘEΣΣAΛΩN, helmeted head of Athena right / [ΛYKO]YTO[Y], Athena Itonia standing left, holding Nike and shield set on ground; monogram to lower left. Burrer pl. 21, 7; BCD Thessaly II 921.3 = RPC Supp. S-1431B.1. VF, dark green patina, rough reverse. Extremely rare.

From the BCD Collection.

None of the three examples known to Burrer at the time of his study had a legible reverse, hindering accurate dating of the issue. All examples of this type appear to be struck from the same obverse die, but only BCD Thessaly II 921.3 has the magistrate’s signature well enough preserved to assign the issue to the time of Tiberius.
