CILICIA, Irenopolis-Neronias. Caracalla. AD 198-217. Æ 3 Assaria (26mm, 11/06 g, 6h). Dated CY 161 (AD 212/3). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Caracalla right / Confronted busts of Hygeia right, draped, and Asclepius left, with his serpent-staff before; AΞ-P (date) below. Cf. Karbach 93; SNG France –; SNG Levante –. Near VF, earthen green patina. Rare.

From the Collection of Kelly Krizan, MD.

This coin appears to from the same reverse die as Karbach 93.2, which is read as CY 163, although the date on that specimen is hardly clear. Karbach’s date of 163 is presumably based on the reading of a specimen in Gotha (= KM 4), the only other example cited in his study.
