293, Lot: 555. Estimate $150.

ISLAMIC, Arab-Byzantine (Imperial image) coinage . Circa 680s-700/10. Æ Fals (19mm, 4.05 g, 12h). ‘Pseudo-Damascus’ mint, probably in northern Jordan or Palestine. Standing imperial figure, holding cruciform monogram and globus cruciger; crescent to upper right / Large m; ‘spiked’ cross between two stars above, two pellets within each arch, facing busts flanking. Cf. Milstein 79; SICA 1, –; Walker –; Album 3522.1. VF, dark green-brown patina. Attractive and interesting. Very rare.

The large output of what is often referred to as the ‘Pseudo-Damascus’ mint is still in need of thorough study. Rachel Milstein’s “A hoard of early Arab figurative coins,” INJ 10 (1988/9), provides the best sampling. Her no. 79 features a facing bust within each arch of the “m”, with a blundered legend flanking. Stars above are not visible in the illustration, although this may be a result of the strike and degree of preservation.
