Cività-Vecchia. Mazio 490; Lincoln 1894-5. EF, dark brown surfaces, a few light spots.
From an old English collection.
A Venetian who studied law at a Jesuit institution in Bologna, Clement XIII’s past played a vital role during his pontificate. Progressives in France, Spain, the Two Sicilies, and Portugal sought the suppression, and later expulsion, of the Jesuits. As he maintained the Order’s usefulness, relations between the Vatican and the states deteriorated up to his untimely death.
