PLANTAGENET. John. 1199-1216. AR Penny (18mm, 1.42 g, 9h). Short Cross type, Group II, class iiic/iiia mule. Rhuddlan mint; Simon, moneyer. Struck in the name and types of Henry II, circa 1205-1210. ҺЄNRICVS R ЄX, crowned facing bust, holding scepter / + SIMON · ON RVLΛ, voided cross, with four pellets in angles. Cf. Brand 3360/3110 (same obv./rev. die [unlisted combination]); SCBI 56 (Mass), 2181 (ths coin); North 973/1; SCBC note under ‘Irregular Local Issue’. VF for issue, toned, some striking weakness, struck from a crude reverse die.
