728949. Sold For $395

Paeonia, Kings of. Patraos. 335-315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (12.99 gm). Laureate head of Apollo right / [P]A-TRA-OY, horseman riding down foe; club below. SNG ANS 1025 (same dies); Sotheby's, 'Paeonian Hoard,' 89 (this coin). Good VF, small obverse die break. $395.

Ex Paeonian Hoard (Sotheby's, 16 April 1969), lot 89.

Note: auction ticket is not present. Nonetheless, an old collection ticket (included) attributes the coin as this lot, and the description in the sale catalogue is conclusive: the obverse die is the same as lot 85 (which is plated), the reverse legend (breaks and portion off the flan) matches, the die axis is the same, and the reverse is struck off-center. Additionally, the symbol below the horse is the same (although described as a vertical thunderbolt, it is actually a vertical club--lot 85 has a similar error, denoting a horizontal thunderbolt, but the plate clearly shows a horizontal club).
