CNG 84, Lot: 640. Estimate $200.
Sold for $120. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

IONIA, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.40 g). Head right, with short hair, wearing Corinthian helmet / Star of eight long rays in incuse square. Gorny & Mosch 176, lot 1246, otherwise unpublished. VF, minor porosity. Extremely rare.

In the Gorny sale, the head on the obverse is identified as Athena, but the clearly short hair makes such a determination unlikely. Nevertheless, the style and fabric of this coin suggests a mint in northwest Asia Minor, perhaps Ionia.
