SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Æ Hemilitra (16mm, 4.87 g). Obverse die signed by E- (Euainetos?). Struck circa 410-405 BC. Head of Arethusa left, wearing necklace; E behind neck / Star of 16 rays in circular incuse within quadripartite incuse square. CNS 18 mv1 corr. (E not noted); SNG ANS 394-7 var. (no E). VF, green patina.

From the Jörg Müller Collection.

The letters E or EY are commonly found on these issues with stars of 8 rays, but not on those of 16 rays. Nonetheless, the high quality of the dies used for these leads some to speculate that it is the signature of an engraver, particularly that of the famed Euainetos, who is best known for his dekadrachm and tetradrachm issues.
