From the Luparello Collection.

Beginning as a lawyer educated at Perugia and Padua, Paul V excelled in canon law and sought to restore immunities for the clergy. Venetian defiance caused a dispute which lead to Paul V’s excommunication of the Venetian government and interdiction on the entire city. Venice remained firm and the Pope later withdrew the censure.
