210, Lot: 57. Estimate $100.
Sold for $205. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

CILICIA, Hierapolis. 2nd-1st centuries BC. Æ 22mm (6.73 g, 12h). Veiled and turreted head of Tyche right / ΙΕΡΟΠΟ-[ΛΕ]ΙΤWN, diademed male head right. Unpublished in the standard references. VF, dark green and black patina, minor roughness.

From the D. Alighieri Collection.

The obverse style is very similar to issues with the river-god Pyramos swimming right on the reverse. The identification of the figure on this reverse is uncertain (perhaps Alexander the Great); a similar diademed bust, also wearing a cuirass, appears on later issues (cf. SNG France 2226-7).
