810340. Sold For $5750

KINGS of MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’. 336-323 BC. AV Stater (18mm, 8.59 g, 6h). Uncertain Macedonian mint (Amphipolis?). Struck under Antipater, circa 330-320 BC. Helmeted head of Athena right / Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; trident-head in left field. Price 175. EF, lustrous. Well centered on a broad flan.

Price lists this type among the gold issues he placed at a mint in Macedon, and suggested they may be from Amphipolis, though there was little certainty. Troxell’s study of Alexander’s lifetime Macedonian mints has also cast doubt on such an attribution.
