DYNASTS of LYCIA. Uncertain dynast. Circa 490/80-440/30 BC. AR Stater (19mm, 9.25 g, 10h). Boar standing left, with head lowered as if preparing to charge, on pelleted ground line / Bearded head left, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, in pelleted square within incuse square. Falghera 47; SNG Copenhagen Supp. 384; SNG von Aulock -; BMC 28; Traité I 841. EF, toned, slight doubling on obverse. Extremely rare, and possibly the finest known.

Lycia was nominally under Persian rule in the late 5th century, but it was practically independent as long as it paid annual tribute to Persia. Ruled by dynasts, their abundant coinage testifies to the great prosperity of Lycia. During this period the Lycian alphabet came into widespread use.
