171, Lot: 173. Estimate $200.
Sold for $481. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Q. Fabius Maximus. Sullan Restoration Issue. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.89 g). Struck circa 82-80 BC. Laureate head of Apollo right; lyre before / Cornucopiae upon thunderbolt; all within wreath. Crawford 371/1; Sydenham 718; Fabia 6. Good VF, toned.

From the Karl Sifferman Collection.
Hoard evidence demonstrates that Crawford 369, 370 and 371 are in fact Sullan period re-issues of moneyers’ types from the 127 BC (Crawford 263, 264 and 265). These moneyers appear to have been ancestors of several of Sulla’s most avid supporters, and the coinage in their names a stopgap measure while Rome underwent the purge of Marian loyalists.
