T. Quinctius Flamininus. 126 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.64 g). Countermarked for Vespasian circa AD 74-79, probably at Ephesus. Helmeted head of Roma right; flamen’s cap behind; c/s: MP VES within rectangular incuse behind head / The Dioscuri riding right; Macedonian shield below. This is apparently one of the earliest denarii found with the Flavian countermark, struck 200 years before the countermark was applied. Most base coins date from the mid first century BC through Tiberius, and probably are part of a huge hoard recovered in the 2nd century and revalidated for circulation.
