MACEDON, Potidaia. Circa 400-356 BC. Æ 10mm (1.35 g, 6h). Female head right, hair in korymbos, wearing earring and necklace / POTEI, Bull butting right. Cf. Alexander p. 216; cf. AMNG 11 note; SNG ANS -; BMC -; Weber -; Traité IV 958; Head, HN, p. 212. VF, dark green patina. Very rare.

From the Christopher Morcom Collection. Ex Roberto Allatini Collection (not in Ars Classica sale).

At the time of Alexander’s article on the coinage of Potidaia, Gaebler, in AMNG, had discounted the earlier reading of the ethnic on one coin, remarking that it was BOTTI rather than POTEI. The ethnic on the present specimen, however, clearly shows POTEI, vindicating the reading of the earlier authors.
