KINGS of PERSIS. Artaxerxes (Ardaxshir) II. Late 1st century BC. AR Drachm (21mm, 4.10 g). Bust left, wearing turreted and diademed crown; monogram (with inner “V”) behind, uncertain symbol before / Fire altar with king to right. Cf. Alram 573; BMC Arabia -. Good VF, some striking weakness and patches of horn silver.



Some drachms of Ardaxshir are known with uncertain symbols in front of the bust. de Morgan pl. XXXI, 15 and 18 illustrates two specimens. The mark on this coin cannot be read definitively, but does not appear to be either of the de Morgan types.
