JUDAEA, Caesarea Maritima(?). Titus. AD 79-81. AR Tetradrachm (23.5mm, 14.80 g, 1h). Dated “Holy Year” 3 of Vespasian (70/1 CE). Laureate bust right, wearing aegis / Eagle standing left on caduceus, with wings spread, holding wreath in beak, bow and quiver over left wing; club to left. McAlee 381; Prieur 142; RPC II 1969. Lightly toned. Near VF. Very rare, four known to Prieur.

From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 453 (2 October 2019), lot 259.

The early coins of Vespasian and Titus have been traditionally attributed to the mint of Antioch but RPC has reattributed them to Caesarea Maritima. Kraay, Butcher, and McAlee have all recognized that multiple mints struck tetradrachms for the Flavians but identifying the mints has been a something of a challenge. Vespasian was hailed emperor by his troops at Caesarea which seems to have become the primary mint for the tetradrachms for the early years in this series. Tetradrachms from the Antioch and Alexandrian mint are of a different style.
