Groats in the name of Edward with mint mark halved sun & rose 1 were in production during the last few months of the reign of Edward IV and the very brief reign of his son Edward V. Tim Webb Ware’s study has shown that a small number of the obverse dies for this rare issue were over marked with the boar’s head, the personal emblem of Richard III, following the appointment of Richard’s henchman, Robert Brackenbury, as Constable of the Tower and Master of the Mint on 20 July 1483. At this time Edward V was a prisoner in the Tower, along with his younger brother. There are no recorded sightings of the two princes after the summer of 1483. Brackenbury was undoubtedly complicit in their murder.
