ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Harthacnut. 1035-1042. AR Penny (17mm, 1.24 g, 1h). Jewel Cross type (BMC xx, Hild. K). London mint; Eadric, moneyer. Struck in the name of Cnut, circa 1036-1037. Diademed bust left / + EDRIC ON LVNDE(NE), cross composed of four ovals united at base by two concentric circles. SCBI 40 (Stockholm), 101 (same dies); North 797; SCBC 1160. Light golden toning with significant luster, slightly double struck obverse. EF. Extremely rare.

A rare posthumous issue of Cnut, struck in the aftermath of Cnut’s death during the regency of his widow Emma Aelgifu, who held Winchester pending the arrival of her son Harthacnut from Denmark.
