Beginning in 1678, French king Louis XIV began to press increasingly broad territorial claims for his kingdom, absorbing the smaller states along the northern and eastern borders. This growth brought France into conflict with not only the Dutch Republic, but the vast Holy Roman Roman Empire. To these belligerents were added England, Spain, and Savoy into a Grand Alliance. Yet over nine years of fighting, neither side was able to score a decisive victory, and by 1697 all were willing to begin negotiations. This coin commemorates the Treaty of Rijswijk, that brought an end to the fighting, but mostly reset the map of Europe to its pre-war borders.

The reverse design, a scene of Noah’s ark and the dove of peace, recalls the covenant God made with Noah after the flood. Of course, the crowned heads of Europe were not as steadfast as the Almighty in adhering to their covenant, and within a few years the continent would again be wracked with war.
