FRANCE, Royal. Philippe VI de Valois (of Valois). 1328-1350. AV Couronne d’or (30mm, 5.39 g, 10h). Authorized 29 January 1340. Crown surrounded by six lis / Cross quernée over voided short cross potent, with voided quatrefoil at center and crowned lis in each quarter; all within polylobe, with trefoil at each spandrel. Duplessy 252; Ciani 271; Friedberg 275. In NGC encapsulation 6864723-001, graded MS 64. Highly lustrous. A most impressive and very rare medieval French gold type coin.

The Couronne d’or is believed to depict the Crown of Charlemagne, which was used for the coronation of all French kings from 875 to 1590. Initially comprised of a heavily jewelled band, four large fleur-de-lis were added during the reign of Philip Augustus. The Crown of Charlemagne was probably chosen by Philippe VI for a coin type to emphasis his legitimacy against the claims to the French throne of Edward III of England.
