ITALY, Venezia (Venice). Nicolò Tron. 1471-1473. AR Tron – Lira da 20 soldi (28mm, 6.55 g, 12h). Struck 1472-1473. Draped bust left, wearing ducal biretta; three leaves below / Winged lion of St. Mark facing, holding gospel; all within wreath. Paolucci 2; MEC 12, 1341-4. Lightly toned with some luster. Near EF.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection, purchased from Alex Numismatica.

Struck from dies produced by Antonello della Moneta, superintendent of the mint, the lira of 20 soldi is the earliest silver testone in Europe. Placing a portrait of the Doge on the coinage proved anathema in the Most Serene and most conservative Republic. Nicolo Tron’s successor did not repeat the experiment.

The final winners of all Triton XXVII lots will be determined at the live public sale that will be held on 9-10 January 2024.
