SAUDI ARABIA, Kingdom (Sa'ud). 'Abd al-'Aziz. AH 1350/1-1373 / AD 1932-1952. AV Pattern Guinea (21.6mm, 7.983 g, 6h). Mint-name ‘Makka al-Mukarrima’ (but probably struck at the Paris mint). Dated AH 1370 (AD 1950). Cf. KM Pn6 = Heritage 3066 (17 August 2018), lot 30427 = Baldwin’s Islamic Coin Auction 19 (25 April 2012), lot 107 (a proof striking with similar legends). In NGC holder 6382217, graded PF66 (although in our opinion apparently a pattern rather than a proof striking). Excessively rare.

Designed as a trial for the newly established Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s first gold coinage, this coin, while denominated as a ‘Saudi Guinea’, was struck to the same weight standard as the British Sovereign. In its design this trial is similar to the layout adopted for the official trade issues, but without the additional diacritical marks on the reverse which were eventually added to the currency coinage (as on the following lot).

The proof trial sold at Heritage in 2018 was described as having been struck by the Paris mint, with two further specimens reportedly still being held in the Paris mint’s archive. No currency strikings of this unadopted type appear to have been published.

The final winners of all CNG Islamic Auction 4 – Session 1 lots will be determined during the live sale that will be held on 19 October 2023.
