In AD 1739 Nadir Shah’s army defeated the Mughals at the battle of Karnool before marching on Dehli. There, they were met by the Mughal emperor, Muhammad Shah, who accompanied them into the city.

Nadir had the khutba read in his name and also ordered for coins to be struck in his name (dated AH 1151 and 1152). He did not depose Muhammad Shah but looted the city and made it known that he expected tribute from the Mughal provincial governors. Coins naming Nadir Shah are accordingly known from the mints of Ahmadabad, ‘Azimabad (Patna), Murshidabad and Muhammadabad Banaras. All are extremely rare.
