Obverse field: letter sin / la ilaha illa Allah / wahdahu la sharik lahu / Abu’l-Hasan Muhammad / ibn amir al-mu’minin / Reverse field: lillah / Muhammad rasul / Allah salla Allah / ‘alayhi wa salam / Imam al-Haqq / al-Mustakfi billah. This is the last ‘Abbasid gold coin struck before the Buwayhids occupied Baghdad. Al-Mustakfi had little choice but to recognise the Buwayhids’ authority, but was nevertheless deposed and blinded, spending the remaining of his life as a prisoner in the caliphal palace. The Buwayhids replaced him with their puppet al-Muti‘, although al-Mustakfi was still acknowledged on coins struck by the Samanids, rivals of the Buwayhids, until his death.
