M. Fannius and L. Critonius. 86 BC. AR Denarius (18mm, 3.77 g, 7h). Rome mint. Wreathed and draped bust of Ceres right / The aediles M. Fannius and L. Critonius, togate, seated right on the subsellium; [P]A (publico argento) to left, ear of grain to right. Crawford 351/1; Sydenham 717; Critonia 1a; RBW 1346. Toned, struck slightly off center. VF.

From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection. Ex New York Sale III (7 December 2000), lot 365.

The two Aediles M. Fannius and L. Critonius are shown in their functions in connection with the distribution of grain. Remarkable is the subsellium which proves that Fannius and Critonius were plebeian Aediles. This office was created in 494 BC to help the Tribunus Plebis. Plebian Aediles were only allowed to sit on a bench called a subsellium, while the Curule Aediles were allowed to sit on a sella curulis and wear the toga praetexta.
