FRANCE, Second Empire. Napoléon III. 1852-1870. Altered CU 10 Centimes (30mm, 9.49 g, 6h). Napoléon’s Humiliation at Sedan. Made circa 1870. 1864 BB10 Centimes, altered to depict Napoléon in a cap reading HENRIOT, with a pipe and collar around neck. Collignon, Guerre p. 56 note. Brown surfaces. Near VF.

From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection.

This interesting engraving mockingly refers to Napoléon as “Henriot,” the diminutive of Henri and likely a reference to Henri V, the Legitimist pretender to the throne of France.
