ANGLO-SAXON, Primary Sceattas. Circa 670/5-690. AR Sceatt (11mm, 1.29 g, 6h). Series A2. Mint in Kent. Radiate bust right; TIC before, chevron and two annulets behind / ‘Standard’ with inverted TOT II; triangle with pellets above, pseudo-legend around. Abramson 3-30 var. (rev. legend inverted); MEC 8 Series Ab, 26-34 var. (same); North 40; SCBC 775. Toned, deposits. VF.
From the Todd Hansen Collection. Ex Spink 159 (12 July 2002), lot 6; Spink Numismatic Circular LXXXII.2 (February 1974), no. 1272.
The obverse of this interesting sceatt has all the hallmarks of Series A2 – a curved exergual line, an annulet to the left, and no line of pellets down the back of the head. However, the reverse, at first glance, appears to lack a the tufa, instead showing the ‘horns’ at the bottom of the standard, as is seen on sceattas of class C. A closer look suggests that the tufa is in fact present, but the ToT/II legend was erroneously engraved upside down.
