FRANCE, Royal. Louis XIII le Juste (the Just). 1610–1643. Cast Æ Medal (44mm, 19.49 g, 6h). By medallist ‘S’. Dated 1617 (in Roman numerals). LVDOVIC · XIII REX CHRISTIANISS · PIVS IVSTVS FEL · AVG · MDCXVVII ·, laureate, armored, and draped bust right, wearing ruff / MARTI FRAN CO RVM PACIFERO, Mars standing left, holding lis-tipped scepter entwined with serpents and inverse spear; in exergue, DVELLOR · BARBARIE/ SVBLATA. Jones II 334. Brown surfaces with spot of discoloration, edge flaws and dings. EF.

As with much Baroque art, this medal looks to Roman prototypes, in this case, the MARTI PACIFERO issues of the Roman emperor Probus. The 17th century artist, however, adapted the monarch’s attire to suit the times and, interestingly enough, replaced the olive branch carried by Mars on the original Roman type with a variant of the caduceus, here seen as a lis-tipped scepter entwined by two servants.
