BOLIVIA, Colonial (as Alto Perú). Carlos II. King of Spain, 1665-1700. AR 8 Reales (36mm, 24.77 g, 9h). Cob type with the legends of Felipe IV. Potosí mint. Dated 1666 P E. Quartered arms within polylobe; assayer initials across fields / Crowned Pillars of Hercules set on ocean waves. Menzel Po-283; KM 21. Toned, areas of find patina, double struck, sea salvaged, scratches. Fine.

From the Don T. Hayes Collection.

News of the demise of Felipe IV in 1665 did not reach the distant mint at Potosí until almost a year later in 1666. Consequently, the mint continued to produce the 1666 coinage in his name despite them being struck during the reign of Carlos II.
