THRACE, Maroneia. Late 2nd-mid 1st centuries BC. AR Tetradrachm (29mm, 15.80 g, 12h). Head of young Dionysos right, wearing ivy wreath with small M between the grape bunches above his brow / Dionysos standing half-left, holding grapes and narthex stalks; monograms flanking. Schönert-Geiss 1177 var. (monongrams; unlisted dies); SNG Copenhagen –. Lightly toned, light scratches and graffito in field on obverse. Good VF.

Ex Rauch 107 (12 November 2018), lot 84. Lot includes a David Sear certificate of authenticity.

The small M between the grape bunches is quite unusual element added to the standard design, and is not mentioned in any of the references. See CNG E-542, lots 54 and 55, for a similar instance of marked obverse dies. One wonders whether the control is actually the mark or signature of an engraver?

Closing Date and Time: 16 August 2023 at 10:16:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to a 20% buyer’s fee.
