Anonymous. 4th-5th centuries. PB Seal (14mm, 3.76 g). Christ enthroned facing, raising hand in benediction, flanked by two crosses / Blank. Cf. Boersema, Christian 13a and 13b-c = Vossen 225-6 (for seal with Christ teaching the apostles); Leukel –. Dark gray-brown surfaces with some dustiness at edge. Good VF. An exceptionally preserved and important seal.

Though Christian themes become ubiquitous on lead seals in the Byzantine period, they are very seldom found on the chestnut-shaped seals of late Roman era. On this seal, Christ is shown seated, facing the viewer, on an unusually shaped throne. The attitude almost resembles the traditio legis type of Christ distributing the law, though this piece lacks any scroll.
