LYDIA, Philadelphia. Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ (33mm, 22.31 g, 1h). Aph. Kornelianos, magistrate. Struck circa AD 147-161. AY KAI TI AI AΔPI ANTΩNЄINOC, laureate head right / ЄΠI AΦ KOPNHΛIANOY ΦIΛAΔЄΛΦЄΩN, Statue of Cybele seated facing, holding scepter; at feet left, lion. Kurth 267; Hochard –; RPC IV.2 1365.2 corr. (Artemis). Dark brown patina with red highlights, die shift on obverse, smoothing. VF. Very rare variety, the second known.

RPC 1365.2 notes that GRPC 267 is a heavily tooled version of the Artemis type but looking at the plate coin of GRPC 267, I do not believe that to be true. The discovery of this second specimen, although smoothed, should be enough evidence to prove this to be a new type.

Closing Date and Time: 26 April 2023 at 11:43:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
