ARABIA, Philippopolis. Philip I. AD 244-249. Æ (28mm, 16.17 g, 11h). Antioch mint. Struck circa AD 247-249. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Roma or Allat seated left on shield, holding two small figures on an eagle and spear; S-C flanking. Butcher, Two pl. 25, 12; Spijkerman 3; RPC VIII Online 2286; Rosenberger 2; Sofaer 3. Earthen brown patina, porosity, areas of weakness. Near VF.

From the Kenneth S. Abramowitz Collection.

The two figures perhaps represent Philip’s parents. His father, Julius Marinus, was deified by the emperor and his bust is featured on coinage of this series struck for Philippopolis, almost certainly at Antioch.
