Sold for $150. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

PHILIP I. 244-249 AD. Pair of die-linked AR Antoniniani. Rome mint. Struck 248 AD. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Inscribed pillar. RIC IV 24c; RSC 193. Lightly toned VF. An opportunity to own a pair of die-linked examples.

Issued to commemorate both Philip's assumption of the consulship for the third time and the millenial anniversary of Rome's founding. Although scheduled for 247 AD, the celebration was delayed pending Philip's return from the front in Dacia. The size of this issue indicates a large number of dies were employed; the ability to link to coins to the same pair of dies is highly unusual indeed.
