Afsharids. Nadir Shah. As king, AH 1148-1160 / AD 1736-1747. AR Double Rupi (26.2mm, 22.74 g, 4h). Peshawar mint. Dated AH 1151 (AD 1738/9). Album 2743. Some weak striking. Near VF. Extremely rare.

In AH 1151 (AD 1738), having extinguished the last remnants of the Afghan Hotaki dynasty, Nadir Shah marched on the Mughal Empire. The Persians sacked the Mughal held cities of Peshawar and Lahore in the Punjab, as wall as Kabul and Jalalabad in present-day Afghanistan. Persian style coins were struck at the occupied cities until AH 1160, when Peshawar was lost to the rising power of the Durranis. While single rupees are known for most years between AH 1151-1160, double rupees from Peshawar are known for AH 1151 only.

The final winners of all CNG Islamic Auction 3 lots will be determined during the live sale that will be held on 27 April 2023.
