The letter in the central circle on both sides of this rare and interesting type is the first letter of Tabariya. Similar dinars are also known from the mints of Sur and Tarablus, the latter denoted by the final ‘s’ of the mint-name. ‘Tabariya’ and ‘Tarablus’ begin with the same letter, and the choice of ‘s’ for Tarablus was presumably intended to avoid any confusion between the two.
