Obverse field: la ilaha illa / Allah wahdahu / la sharik lahu / al-Sadat al-ru’asa / Reverse field: lillah / Muhammad rasul Allah / salla Allah ‘alayhi / wa ‘ala alihi / al-Muti‘ lillah / al-Hasan b. Ahmad. Vardanyan, Sectarians 11; Artuk 891; Album 684. Small scuff in obverse margin at 2h. Near EF. Very rare, especially in this condition.

The Qarmatids were a radical Isma‘ili group, originally based in Arabia, who briefly expanded into Syria and Palestine after the fall of the Ikhshidids. While opposed to the ‘Abbasids, they nevertheless cited the ‘Abbasid caliph on their coins, along with their own ruling council of six or seven elders known as the Chief Sayyids, named on the obverse of this coin as al-Sadat al-ru‘asa.
