CELTIC, Britain. Corieltauvi. Circa 45-10 BC. AV Stater (5.31 gm). Domino-V Type. Undefined bulge / Corieltauvian-style horse left with large triangular head; pellet and "domino" above, letter V before. Hobbs 3186 var. (V type); Van Arsdell 829-3 var. (same); cf. SCBC 393. VF, rose gold, fully displayed V. Extremely rare variety of a rare type; only one other example recorded showing V in this fashion (Chris Rudd list 64, no. 43). ($1000)

Found South Cave, Humberside, October 2001.

Because this Domino stater was struck off-centre it clearly displays a V-shape in front of the horse, a feature not normally discernible. Dr. Jeffrey May, archaeologist and specialist in Corieltauvian coinage, suggests the letter V could stand for VEP, whose very rare coins have hitherto been reckoned to begin the Corieltauvian inscribed series.
