(857.1) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. AR Stater (21mm, 6.23 g, 1h). Sosibios and Simy..., magistrates. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; ΣΩΣIBIOY to left / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; bee(?) to upper left, Σ-I/M-Y across central field. See Nomos 4, 1378 (same obv. die). Near VF, toned, scattered marks.


(857.2) THESSALY, Thessalian League. Late 2nd – mid 1st century BC. AR Stater (22mm, 6.20 g, 11h). Leon..., magistrate. Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath; monogram to left, thunderbolt below / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩ[N], Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; Λ-E/O-N across central field. McClean 4713, pl. 176, 14 corr. (same dies; monogram incorrectly described, thunderbolt not noted). Near VF, once cleaned, now retoning.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; above spear, ΘPA to left, owl to right; monogram of ΠA in outer right field. Not found in the consulted references, but see Klose p. 345, fifth line, for another issue that may have these magistrates’ names in long form (ΘPAΣΥΛO and ΠAYΣA). VF, lightly toned.

Head of Zeus right, wearing oak wreath / ΘEΣΣA/ΛΩN, Athena Itonia striding right, hurling spear held in her right hand, shield on her left arm; ΘPA-ΣΥ[ΛO] above spear, HP monogram in inner left field, monogram of ΠAY in outer right field. CNG 66 (19 May 2004), lot 351 (same dies); see also Klose p. 345, fifth line, for another issue that may have two of these magistrates’ names in long form (ΘPAΣΥΛO and ΠAYΣA). VF, toned, rev. is slightly off-center.

McClean 4778, pl. 177, 17 var. (HPA rather than HP monogram). Near VF, toned, obverse porosity.
